SiliconPV Chairmen's Message

Welcome to the SiliconPV Conference, nPV Workshop and bifi PV Workshop 2020 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

It is our great honour and pleasure to invite you to the 10th SiliconPV Conference to be held in Hangzhou, China on June 01 – 05, 2020.

Over the last 10 years, the SiliconPV Conference has established itself as one of the world’s top PV conferences where in-depth new scientific insights and reviews on technological excellence in crystalline Si-based PV technology are presented. The founders of the SiliconPV Conference in 2011 were from the top PV research centers in Europe. They had in mind to create a highly technical and scientific conference where PV researchers acquire in a few days a wealth of information and understanding on the latest achievements and developments in silicon PV technology, combining cost-effectiveness and high performance. The SiliconPV Conference features top quality presentations based on a blind review and highly-selective process.

As for the previous years, SiliconPV will be held in conjunction with the nPV Workshop focusing on the next generation of high-efficiency silicon solar cells using n-type substrates. The novelty of the 10th SiliconPV 2020 is that it will also be held in conjunction with the bifiPV Workshop focusing on bifacial PV technology, including systems and their bankability. And this year, for the first time in history of SiliconPV, the conference will be in China, in the beautiful city of Hangzhou. We sincerely hope that the conference will be a great opportunity for the different scientific PV communities to meet and share their recent achievements and developments in both R&D and manufacturing of Silicon PV devices.

In line with this objective, we invite the SiliconPV Community to submit high-quality abstracts, presenting the latest results of their scientific and technology work to share it with their peers during SiliconPV 2020. The R&D-topics of interest are in line with the previous years, ranging from material aspects, characterization, new cell concepts, process technologies, process integration, cell manufacturing, cell assembly to module technology, including the rapidly increasing activity on tandem approaches, where a high-bandgap partner is integrated above a Si bottom cell to achieve conversion efficiencies beyond the limits of single-junction Si cells. All the abstracts, manuscripts and posters will be presented in English.

Our local host will be Professor Yang Deren, head of the State Key Laboratory of Silicon Materials at Zhejiang University. The University was built in 1897. It is one of the oldest universities in China and, with more than 46,000 students, it is also ranked as one of the top universities in the country. Prof. Yang Deren will be the Chairman the nPV Workshop 2020.

The world is now at a turning point where we have the opportunity to stabilize CO2 concentration and possibly reverse climate change. Alternatively, we risk to experience the devastating effects of the changing global climate as a result of energy intensive behaviour. The responsibility of the PV scientific and industrial community is enormous. PV has already demonstrated cost competitiveness against other sources of energy in many parts of the world and is becoming the most important technology for new electricity generation capacity. We must continue, if not accelerate, the deployment of PV as the race against climate change is intensifying. Continued R&D in efficiency improvement and cost reduction are keys in increasing the rate of deployment of renewable energy. We are certain that the scientific PV community will succeed in reaching very soon efficiencies above 30% and in reducing cost down to $0.10/W. We are also sure that the PV industry is capable of making the necessary investment and of delivering PV systems at a multi-TeraWatt level.

As PV scientists, this is our goal and our mission. We would like to share this journey with you. We are sure that you will enjoy SiliconPV 2020 in Hangzhou, at the edge of the “Solar Valley” of China, where the presence of the largest PV manufacturers, top R&D PV laboratories from universities, Chinese Academy of Science and the PV industry will enable an exciting and fruitful combination of scientific exchange. If you intend to present your work or just attend the conference, it is our great honour, together with Prof Yang Deren, Prof Christophe Ballif, Dr Wang Yan and Dr Radovan Kopecek, Chairs and co-Chairs of the co-located workshops, to invite you to participate in the 10th SiliconPV Conference, nPV Workshop and bifiPV Workshop in Hangzhou.

We look forward to seeing you in Hangzhou.
